MIYATAKI HO-ON KAI
宮滝報恩会
HJDA Member Academy
The Miyataki Ho-on Kai was created in 2013, when the existing Omiya Minbu Kai split into two groups (the other being Kotobuki Kai). Miyataki Ho-on Kai pays tribute to its founding instructors, Miyashiro Sensei and our founder, Otaki Sensei. The "Miya" comes from Miyashiro Sensei and the "taki" comes from Otaki Sensei. "Ho-on" means "to honor" thus showing our respect to both sensei.
The school's origins stem from the Otaki Minbu Kai under the direction of the late Mrs. Jean Otaki. Mrs. Otaki learned Japanese dance from the Kinsen Ryu school of dance (of which a branch school still exists on the island of Kauaʻi). She later started her own school which was based out of the Nuʻuanu Soto Mission Shoboji temple. Later one of her students, Ms. Eiko Miyashiro, earned the title of shihan (teacher rank) and started her own school, the Miyashiro Minbu Kai around 1995.
As the years progressed, Mrs. Otaki requested that Mrs. Miyashiro take over her school. From then, Mrs. Miyashiro was head of both the Otaki Minbu Kai and the Miyashiro Minbu Kai. In 2009, it was decided by members of both schools to combine under the name of Omiya Minbu Kai which honors both Otaki Sensei and Miyashiro Sensei. Though Miyashiro Sensei didn't teach, she still held the seat of CEO for our school while the daily operations were delegated to title holders within the academy.
The Miyataki Ho-on Kai still continues the tradition of Japanese Shinbuyo (semi classical and folk dances) that our founders started many years before.
We welcome new students regardless of age or previous dance experience. We meet once a week on Saturdays at the Nuʻuanu Soto Mission Shoboji Temple in Nuʻuanu between 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon.
Those interested in joining the school are asked to contact Derrick Iwata, the school's current instructor.
